Unfortunately, even the most “intelligent” machines don’t understand the cultural nuances and linguistic subtleties that make for the best writing and translations. Machines are consolidators and replicators, not creative thinkers. They are excellent support tools, but they inhabit a world of mimicry, not a creative one. You can’t rely on a machine to produce creative and innovative language. Software has no sense of humor, can’t grasp the subtleties of language and doesn’t understand cultural differences! Over time, everything begins to sound the same. This is true of music, movies and marketing. And, that’s fine, if you don’t want to stand out from the crowd…But, eventually, people will tire of a world of uninspired remakes and sequels.
A few examples.
Often, non-native speakers and automatic translators fail to see the mistakes they’re making. Here are a few real-world published examples:
“Born in 1889 in Broth, Belgium.” “Bouillon” is “broth” in English; however, the name of the Belgian town is Bouillon. Proper names shouldn’t be translated.
“Séculaire”: translated as “secular”. Should be: “centuries old”, from the Latin for “generation”.
A French movie: “Balle Perdue” translated as “Lost Bullet”. Should be “Stray Bullet”.
“Coffee grown by small farmers”. Should be “on small farms”.
From a chocolate manufacturer: “Come and experience the odors!”. That should be “aroma”. “Odors” has a negative connotation for food.
From US Open 2023 coverage: “Laslo Djere reveals mistake he did after going up by two units towards Novak Djokovic”.
Sometimes it’s not quite right. Sometimes, it’s very wrong! Sometimes a single word can make all the difference.
